The Weapon of Choice

Since the origin of our nation we have had the 'right to bear arms'. Today most of us have the power to defend our freedom and protect ourselves as well as others. Unfortunately our 2nd amendment rights are constantly being threatened as a result of domestic terrorism in this country. The violent acts of a few people should not result in the loss of our right to defend ourselves from all criminals-whether they be from a foreign land, our government, or our community.

Just before Jesus was betrayed and crucified he told the disciples "But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one." Luke 22:36  He taught them the importance of practical, personal, defense readiness. What's more Jesus expects us to have our spiritual swords on hand at a moment's notice. After all the Bible says "And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:" {Ephesians 6:17} Lord help us not take such a great privilege for granted. Just ask the millions of people in foreign lands who have had their Bibles taken away.

In this country it happened to my daughter when she was in kindergarten. Yes, in kindergarten! A teacher saw my little girl and her friend praying over their food. When she walked up to them she ordered them to stop and then grabbed the pocket-size New Testament my daughter had set down on the lunch table. A short time later, I withdrew her from class and home-schooled her. At that time I'd never heard about that particular incident. Had I known about it before, she'd been gone far sooner and I'd have confronted that teacher.

     Weapon Preparation

We have the freedom now-today- to read and study God's Word for comfort, for guidance, and for defense against the enemy. It can be a dangerous thing to neglect such a great privilege. If you don't use it you will lose it! One day 'they' may take our precious Bibles away from us. If or when that happens will you have enough of the Word in your mind, heart, and spirit to protect you during the trials and temptations ahead in these last days? When the enemy speaks deceit and discouragement to your soul will you be able to say "It is written!" like Jesus did?

Weapon Misalignment

On the other hand, if you don't know how to use your weapon of choice then you could do great harm to yourself and others. That is why Timothy 2:15 says to 'rightly divide' the Word of truth. In other words, we need to dissect or analyze scripture in minute detail. And it has to be aligned correctly. (Read Isaiah 28:10) Just as students are required to study their subjects and curriculum with serious intent we as Bereans should do the same. And more so because we seek eternal knowledge concerning the kingdom of heaven.

     Weapon Alteration

Another way a weapon or the Word of God can become dangerous or deadly is when it has been altered.  Satan continually schemes to change or dilute the Holy Bible. Perverted versions are one of his favorite devices. Here is a chart which compares a small, yet significant selection of verses in a few versions. As you can see the KJV stands above the rest. And as if adding to and taking away from the God's Word isn't enough, Satan has sent his false prophets and false teachers into the midst of God's people to try to deceive and destroy them. Hebrews 4:12-13 KJV  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.  Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

Revelation 19:13-16 KJV  And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.  (14)  And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.  (15)  And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.  (16)  And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

  1. I love your point about making sure you know how to use your weapon! I've never put words to it, but that is so true that we might have good intentions, but if we aren't using Scripture or truth correctly, we can cause more harm than good.

    1. Thank You Emily. God help us to never use His Word contrary to His will. But, if we have already, God reveal it to us and forgive us. He is merciful.

  2. Excellent word, Tina. Thanks. May every Christian get to know God's Word well.

    1. Thanks Mary. Yes, amen. We can't pick and choose just the parts we like. His Word is meant to conform us to His image. So it's all for our good! If we lack wisdom He said ask.
